Anti-virus phishing scam
Recently, I received a call from a new customer. They told me they were locked out of their computer. The customer told me that they received a message or email, stating that Norton Anti-virus was expiring, and that they had to renew it. The phishing email made it sound very urgent, and that their computer was in danger if they didn’t renew it right away. From what I gather, the customer did a google search for Norton’s customer service number. This is a mistake, as more often than not, fake numbers are at the top of the search results page. Long story short, the customer said they were told to do a bunch of stuff on their computer, which led to them being locked out of it. Fortunately, I was able to do what is called a “Windows Reset”. This enables the computer to retain all of your files and settings, but return the computer back to factory specs. All of the customers files were intact, and I helped them get setup with Malwarebytes Pro.
