Laptop keyboard replacement
I haven’t written a repair blog in awhile, so here is a new one. I had a customer call about their laptop, which they type on a lot for their job. The keyboard was worn out (the A key was broken off), so they bought a replacement keyboard for it. They wanted to see if I could install the new keyboard they bought. They brought me the laptop and replacement keyboard. The keyboard looked like the right one for the Dell laptop G5 SE (the model of the laptop). Taking the laptop apart was a bit of a task. After removing everything to get to the keyboard, it turned out you can’t replace it. The palm rest and keyboard are all one assembly. In years past, laptops had removable keyboards, and were easy to replace (especially on Dell laptops). I put the computer back together, and told the customer about the issue. The customer decided to just get a mouse and keyboard for the laptop.
